John McNally joined Merseyside Police in 1984 and transferred into the dog handling section in 1991. His dog, Deeko, who sadly passed away only this year, won Great Britain Police Dog of the year in 1999 for saving John's life - only one of the occasions that this happened. In 2001, John sustained a career-ending injury which forced him to retire from the Police Force in 2002. Upon leaving, he decided to use the expert knowledge he gained during his time with the dog section by purchasing Greenfields.

Gaynor McNally, John's wife, also comes from a background in the Police Force. She joined the force in 1983 and served until 2003, when she left to help run Greenfields full time.

When John and Gaynor bought Greenfields, there were 80 kennels on site and 55 cat chalets. They have since undergone a programme of expansion, modernisation and improvement and have added an extra 69 kennels and a grooming service.
